The Console Wars: From A Totally Non Fanboy Point Of View

I must admit until recently I did not realize the true extent of this ‘war’. I knew that my cousin seemed to be rather disparaging about my new PS3 and my PS2 before that come to think of it but it as I already owned a 360 and a Wii I did not really think much of it. Then I started to visit sites such as N4G and quickly, much to my horror, became aware of the fact that ‘war’ really is a good analogy for this phenomenon.

Don’t get me wrong there is nothing like a bit of good hearted rivalry to spice a subject up but a lot of these guys are far from good hearted about it. The discussion gets downright nasty and personal.

Anyway, I decided to look, from a completely neutral perspective, at each of the big three consoles (we will leave handhelds out of it because Microsoft can’t play) and see if any of the fanboys are actually justified in their stance (if not their general demeanor).

The problem is that you can see this competition a lot of different ways. Is it all about sales? About the power of the machine? About the exclusive games available? Value for money?

You would have thought that sales would be a reasonably easy statistic to research effectively but you would be wrong. There are different figures for each country, then you need to decide wether you mean life time sales or are you only interested in recent figures? Lifetime sales in the USA indicate that Playstation is winning that war but not with its latest edition the PS3 but with the PS2. That is hardly surprising as it has been around way longer than all the rest.

How about if you are only interested in recent figures? Well, how recent are you talking? For 2008 Nintendo kicked butt in the US. But the Xbox 360 has sold extremely well over a longer period of time. To confuse things even further latest figures for this year show that in the huge Japanese market PS3 is, it must be said for the first time, starting to kick some tail. It has been top of the hardware sales list a few weeks in a row now. Very confusing but I am sure some fanboys can put me right on all this with their unique spin on things.

Let’s move on to the power of the system, though after some quick research I can see tears (and flaming) ahead. Which is the most powerful console? The first thing we can do is eliminate the Nintendo, it is not, nor was it ever meant to be, the most powerful. After that it becomes very confusing with fans of both consoles claiming the crown. I looked to Gamespot to try to throw some light on the question without bombarding me with fanboy spin. It be fair they seem to think that the Xbox 360 may slightly shade the PS3 on graphics. But even they put in the proviso that game developers don’t seem to be using the PS3 to its full potential.

Games on the PS3 do tend to be blurrier than their Xbox 360 counterparts, but the PlayStation 3 games can look just as good as the Xbox 360 games when developers put some effort into it

Again if I have totally misrepresented any console here I am sure the Fanboys can put me straight.

How about exclusive titles? Again not as simple a question to answer as you may think. Are we talking simply numbers? It would seem important to take into account the quality of the titles too wouldn’t it? And then you are deep into subjective territory. Not a good place to be when there is a war going on. But still we have to try so donning my helmet and flack jacket I try to talk mainly about titles that are stirring up a lot of anticipation.

It would seem a statement of simple fact to say that the Xbox 360 has the most exclusive titles in terms of lifetime. Of course, it has been around a bit longer. The thing is PS3 is undoubtedly hitting a purple patch in this area in 2009. Not counting the ones that have already hit the shelves such as Killzone 2 and Halo Wars, things seem quieter from this point forward for Xbox 360 owners than their Playstation 3 counterparts . They have vague promises about titles such as Alan Wake and some other lesser lights. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list just a general feel.

PS3 owners are drooling over Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Bioshock 2 and even a slight hope that Gods of War 3 will make the shelves this year. Nintendo has by far the most exclusive titles coming out in 2009, simple as that, though possibly not the most hotly anticipated.

So after my little research, where do I now stand on the question, which is the best console? I will tell you, I stand very firmly, as always, in the camp signposted ‘So glad I own all three consoles’. Probably fairly predictable really, why on earth would you not want to have it all, there is just so much fun available on each of them.

  2. You are wrong about the PS3 being weaker than the 360 in terms of graphics. PS3 games can have better graphics than the 360, it justs takes a lot more time and money that only Sony is willing to do. That is why only a scant few first party titles surpass the 360 in graphics and one exclusive third party title. These games are Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Killzone 2, MGS4 and a few first party games coming up this year (God of War III and Heavy Rain). I guess just a rare few games is not enough to justify buying the PS3 just for having the best graphics capability for a console. The place to go for “graphic whores” will always be the PC if they have the money, since quite a few PC games already look better than anything on all three consoles.

    • Yeah like I say I am very far from an expert in the matter. I did get the feeling that though most seem to agree that the Xbox has games with lightly better graphics at the moment the PS3 is capable of more than developers are allowing it to show.

It is funny you should use the term ‘graphics whore’ once upon a time that was all anyone cared or talked about. I sense a real back lash against that attitude now and that is probably a good thing.

Your comment alone shows that you are not a person that should be taken seriously. As a matter of fact, based on your comment perhaps you should move to the US. Because you comment was a fanboy comment of a different type and yet you also appear to be retarded!

  4. Fanboyism is so prevalent in this generation thanks to the proliferation of online play. Talking about N64 generation, it didn’t matter if had an N64 and your friend had a Playstation, if you wanted to play a playstation game together you’d sit down at his house, and vice versa for the n64 game. Never before did you feel like you were missing out because your friends had console A and you had console B.
So this generation really raised the stakes, and from there human psychology kicked in to create the fanboys and flamewars.

Ultimately, in a little place called paradise, I’d like to see cross-platform play for multiplat titles, I’d love to see PS4 and X720 players be able to face off against each-other but that’s a rather hard pill for a company like Microsoft, or Sony, to swallow. a

    • Ooo what a great idea. I see why it will probably never happen but imagine these fanboys being able to team up against each other online and rid themselves of their aggression that way. How brilliant.

  5. Every game that is out there and in development is unique. Unique in its story, design, presentation, gameplay, visuals and other elements it is built on. Each game is different; therefore the experiences will differ from other games. For example, Gears of War provides an experience Uncharted will not provide (and vice versa). Same with Metal Gear Solid against Splinter Cell; Alan Wake against Heavy Rain; Halo against Killzone; God of War against Ninja Gaiden; F.E.A.R against DOOM; Call of Duty against Brothers in Arms etc. Each of these games is an entertainment tool – we game to get entertained and have fun in the process. These games allow us to be the actors and heroes in the fictional interactive worlds. So, regardless of platform, each game is unique and will provide a different experience. The reason games look different graphically is a combination of Game Engine/Technology and Art Style the developers are building their fictional worlds on.

In this generation, I have embraced the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (and the PC). As for the wii, though it is an exceptional gaming machine, I do not see myself buying it…

  6. First, Matt is incorrect in his statement regarding the ps3’s graphical prowess. There is zero proof(unless you consider the rantings of Sony PR proof)that the PS3 is technically capable of better graphics If you take a look at the links below, you will get an unbiased opinion from multi-platform pro journalists(not the snake oil salesmen of Sony’s PR).
Eurogamer has over 15 graphics face-offs with roughly 5 games per article. 360 has won everytime.
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-multiformat-face-off-article

Gamespot concurs with each round of their comparisons.

I would also like to mention that Sony has a group of viral marketers using the social newsite you mentioned N4G to spread FUD. So be careful what you read.

You probably didn’t notice, but this is with the DEFAULT display settings. To make it look better, you just turn on super white or whatever. Xbox 360 by default has that enabled.

    Check display settings 🙂

Also, with multi-platform, Xbox360 has a processor that will basically do whatever without doing a lot of effort.
The ps3 cell processor is a supercomputer waiting to be programmed for.
An example of a well developed game is Killzone 2. An example for Xbox360 is Gears of War 2 (even though I thought they could’ve done better…)

But I have to face the facts for all the fanboys:

    Playstation 3:
    Blu-ray
Free Online (I say better, and yes, I have an Xbox360 + Live)
    Plenty of Settings
Can be turned into computer (linux)
    Can replace Hard Drive Easily
    Comes with a 80 gb+ hard drive
    Can link up with PSP
    Has more future potential
    VERY low failure rate
    Six Axis
    Bluetooth
    Wireless
    Controllers Rechargable
Mostly Backwards Compatible(Only on 60,20, and earlier 80gb)
    Sd Card Reader
    4 USB
    MS Pro Duo Reader
    Flash Card Reader
Quiet, and Sexy (no giant power thingy)
    $399 to $499

    Xbox 360:
Easier to develop for = More games
Claims that it has better online
    More Consoles sold
    High Failure Rate
    Paid Online Subscription
    Wireless Ready ($100 for adapter)
Limited Hard Drive Expanding, and expensive
    Can chat through everything
    Partial Backwards Compatibility
    Pretty Loud
    $399

I say the Ps3’s better, but whatever 🙂
And the Arcade was a stupid idea :[

  9. My bad, try this link.
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-360-vs-ps3-face-off-round-18-article

I would also like to ask you why you used games that are owned by Sony to claim the PS3 capable of more graphically. Don’t you think it is awful convient to make such a claim when these Sony owned I.P.s will never be allowed on any console except a Playstation?

    Comment by Truth | March 22, 2009 | Reply

  10. I didn’t look at all the face-offs you linked to (18 rounds? Yikes!), but I have read some in the past and looked at the SF IV one recently. I do recall that when multi-plat games were made a few years ago Xbox 360 games were hitting 60fps and PS3 ports were getting arounf 30fps. Now with the current batchs the games’ fps are nearly matching, and this is with the development cycle (not porting PS3 games from Xbox 360 code).

Many of the articles being written state that PS3 is harder to code for and (based off the comparison articles) if developed simultaneously, Xbox 360 edges out ahead by varying margins owing to it being easier to program for.

Of course, all of these are based upon the same game on multiple systems. No one’s parading around Xbox’s superiority over Wii for a multiplatform release. Most people ARE looking at exclusive games to showcase system graphics. Why shouldn’t a game be considered because it couldn’t be ported to another system?

There are numerous Gears of War 2 vs. Killzone 2 comparisons out there such as http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=4192. The main reason PS3 exclusives have better graphics is simply due to data storage. No doubt Xbox exclusives would look better if MS went with an HD-DVD drive, but they relied on DVDs that were from the LAST gaming generation. Also, due to MS’s marketing strategy of a console SKU for only $200US that lacks a hard drive, developers can’t utilize an install buffer to inch in the extra data.

This alone seriously puts a damper on Xbox 360 and constrains developers in the graphics of a game. Whether or not the 360 exclusives COULD have better graphics IF it had more space is a moot point, MS has painted itself in a corner on this one. Sony devs have something like 7x the disk space to utilize and can always require a multi-gigabyte install for a new game.

  12. From a developers stand point the ps3 is a real pain in the arse… look… the Xbox360 wins hands down, for its power and ease of development. Eurogamer is an excellent site to check out. Again and again the 360 dominates the ps3 in frames per second, texture resolution and post processing (especially at 1080p). It’s a FACT get over sony fanboys.

Bottom line… the ps3 has crippled architecture, which is a HUGE pain to work with.

Oh, Far Cry 2 sucked beyond belief!

And the Ps3 has the eyetoy ($40 – $60 I think), home, and the life saving Folding Home 🙂

Did I meantion you can charge the controllers out of the box?
